Why Concrete Foundations Beat Timber for NZ Homes
Timber piles and suspended floors might have been the go-to for decades, but let’s be honest — concrete foundations are taking centre stage in residential building projects across Aotearoa. And for good reason.
Whether you’re building your dream home or managing a new subdivision, more people are ditching the stumps and opting for slabs. Why? Because concrete foundations offer strength, stability, and long-term peace of mind — all the things you want your house (and your life) to be built on.
So, What’s So Great About Concrete Foundations?
Here’s the short list:
Wait, There’s More Than One Type of Concrete Foundation?
Absolutely — and this is where things get interesting. Depending on your site, budget, and design needs, there are several systems to choose from. Here’s a quick rundown:
1. Conventional Slab
Your classic concrete floor — poured directly onto compacted ground, often with a thickened edge. Simple, cost-effective, and great for flat sites.
2. RibRaft / Waffle Slab
A super popular choice in NZ right now. This system involves polystyrene pods with reinforcing ribs running between them. It ‘floats’ on the ground, making it ideal for soft or reactive soils.
3. Xpod Slab System
Like RibRaft but uses Xpod’s proprietary plastic pods as a void former. Great if you’re building on unstable ground with excellent thermal performance, and it plays well with engineered designs.
4. Cupolex / EcoDomes
An eco-friendly concrete floor system that uses plastic, dome-shaped forms to create voids within a concrete slab. Great for improving under-slab airflow and reducing concrete volume (and carbon footprint).
5. Biax 500
This is a hybrid system that combines features of ribbed slabs with high insulation values. It is the most innovative waffle raft for New Zealand concrete heavy-duty foundations on liquefiable and high expansive clays.
Concrete vs Timber: The Final Word
We get it — timber has its place, especially on steep or tricky sites. But in most residential builds, concrete foundations provide a smarter, longer-lasting, more energy-efficient solution.
Add in the fact that many modern concrete systems are specifically engineered for New Zealand conditions (hello, earthquakes), and it’s no wonder we’ve seen a shift across the industry.
But Which Foundation’s Right for You?
That depends on your site, soil type, budget and building plans. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. At Rapid Slabs & Precast, we offer in-house foundation design services — so whether you’re just starting out or halfway through plans with your architect, we can help guide the best foundation solution for your build and budget.
We regularly work with homeowners, designers, builders and developers across the Wellington region, and we’ve seen just about every site scenario there is. We’ll help you get it right from the ground up — literally.
